The building, designed for 20 pupils is located on the west side of St Andrews School. Secure play to the north of the building indirectly links to the adjacent Reception and Key Stage One play areas of the main school. ARCO₂ designed this Ecofabpermanent pre-school.
The building negotiates an awkward, narrow, linear, sloping site running north to south. The post and beam construction allows an easy resolution to the sloping site with only minimal excavations. A single, central mono-pitch south-facing roof flanked north-south with flat green roofs. High-level glazing offers natural daylight into the centre of the building while providing high levels of natural ventilation. The south-facing mono-pitch enables subsequent inclusion of PV and/or solar thermal panels. Super efficiency is provided through a small main condensing gas boiler providing hot water with a space heating through an underfloor system. Air permeability is 1m3/m2/hr@50pa.
