Liskeard Junior School, Cornwall
Project Brief
Type: Education
Area (m2):
Budget: Disclosed
Features:
At the time of our commission, the current Head Teacher had an open-minded approach to a new intervention to Liskeard Junior School. The Headteacher identified a need to provide the existing school with a welcoming entrance that would serve to provide a place of refuge for parents collecting their children, a barrier to restrict persons entering the school and also provide a space that could be used for evening classes without having to compromise the security of the main school building. ARCO2 produced an innovative and highly sustainable solution incorporating locally grown timber, utilizing local labour to produce complex curved glue-laminated beams and ensured that the structure was super-insulated to ease the burden on the existing heating system. Externally clad in timber and reflective galvanized sheet material, the vaulted roof structure and the curved canopy have provided an extremely successful intervention fulfilling the practical needs of being light, airy and welcoming with aesthetic appeal.
Constructed on time and within budget, this new extension highlights that schools can have a quality build at a cost that can be afforded.
