Eco Holiday Chalet
Project Brief
Type: Residential / New Build
Area (m2): 25
Budget:
Features: Lamb’s Wool Insulation, Underfloor Heating, Sedum Roof
We were delighted to have had the opportunity of replacing a decrepit and ugly chalet on Tregonhawke Cliff with a contemporary design which would be sustainable, low maintenance and at ease with the coastal landscape, this build was designed by ARCO2 Architecture Ltd and constructed by Ecofab.
Strict Council policies dictated the new building could have a footprint no larger than the original of only 31 m2. The ‘two-box’ design creates an illusion of spaciousness and features an open plan kitchen dining & living room, a wet room and bedroom study with a fold-down desk bed. Folding sliding doors provide spectacular southerly views over Whitsand Bay.
The gently curving roof was derived from coastal inspiration, taking its cues from the waves, seagull wings and the natural landscape. It’s covering of living sedum plants both blend the roof into the hillside and assists rainwater attenuation, particularly important in a cliffside location.
With Lamb’s wool insulation and underfloor heating, the new St John is a cosy curvy seaside retreat.
