Inspiring the Next Generation: Two Decades of Student Mentorship at ARCO2

At ARCO2, sustainability has always been at the heart of what we do — but our commitment goes beyond the buildings we design. For nearly two decades, we’ve been passionate about sharing knowledge, opening doors, and inspiring young people to pursue careers in architecture.  From school pupils testing their creative potential to graduates honing their skills in practice, we’ve provided countless opportunities for work experience, placements, and apprenticeships. Many of these young people have gone on to study architecture at university, with several returning to ARCO2 as qualified architects — a true testament to our welcoming culture and ethos of learning.

A Culture of Education and Mentorship

Our aim has always been to demystify architecture and show that sustainable design is not only essential for the planet, but also creative, rewarding, and deeply human. By offering hands-on experiences in both design and construction, we give students a clear sense of how ideas translate into buildings — and how sustainable thinking underpins every decision. Through this approach, we’re helping shape a generation of architects who are confident, socially aware, and committed to designing buildings that enhance both people’s lives and the environment.

Frankie’s Journey: From Year 10 Work Experience to Architectural Assistant

The story of our newest team member, Frankie Smith, is a perfect example of this journey in action.  Frankie first joined us during her Year 10 work experience week, where she had her first real introduction to the world of architecture. Inspired by ARCO2’s strong sustainability ethos and supportive environment, she decided to pursue architecture as a career.  Fast forward to today, Frankie is a BSc (Hons) Part 1 Architectural Assistant and a recent graduate from the Welsh School of Architecture in Cardiff. She has returned to ARCO2 for her Part 1 placement year while undertaking her master’s degree, which uniquely combines university study with professional practice.

This summer, Frankie also spent time volunteering on one of our live construction sites with ADD Sustainable Construction, learning first-hand how drawings and details evolve into buildings.   https://www.addsc.co.uk/

That experience, alongside her university projects, reflects her strong drive to maximise sustainability and community benefits in all her design work.  We’re thrilled to have Frankie back in the studio, bringing her passion for residential design, from social housing to one-off homes, and her curiosity for innovative ideas that will shape her future projects.

Shaping the Future of Sustainable Architecture

Frankie is just one of many success stories. Over the years, we’ve seen students return as colleagues, bringing with them new perspectives and skills but holding on to the same passion for sustainability that first drew them to ARCO2.  For us, this cycle of mentoring, educating, and collaborating is vital for the advancement of sustainable architecture. It ensures that the knowledge and values we’ve built over 22 years aren’t just contained within our practice, but are shared and multiplied through the next generation.  At ARCO2, we’re not only designing low-energy, healthy, and beautiful homes — we’re investing in the future of architecture itself.
