A SENSITIVE RESTORATION IN MID CORNWALL

This project in Redruth, Mid Cornwall required a careful architectural approach that respected the historic value of the original building while introducing thoughtful contemporary improvements. The design was developed to preserve the character and integrity of the structure while ensuring it remained practical, comfortable and suitable for modern living.

Particular attention was given to scale, materials and detailing to ensure the changes felt sympathetic to the existing architecture and surrounding environment. The project balanced conservation principles with modern performance, helping protect the long term future of the building while enhancing its usability and comfort.

The result is a sensitive restoration that celebrates the building’s historic character while carefully adapting it for contemporary life within its Cornish setting.

We work with clients across the county as experienced architects in Cornwall, creating thoughtful restorations, renovations and sustainable homes that respect both heritage and landscape.

REUSE OF EXISTING MATERIALS

With a background in recycling our client is as passionate about reusing materials as we are. This will ensure that the building will remain honest to its original form, sitting comfortably within the surrounding area.

Design features include the reuse of existing windows and external cladding, along with the use of locally sourced materials to maintain authenticity and reduce environmental impact.

FAMILY HOME WITH NATURAL PRIVACY

The high density of trees and plant that are already around the site offers high level screening for privacy. They are visually pleasing and lend themselves to the aesthetic of the bungalow as a whole.

Design features include preserving much of the site’s original character, creating open plan living, kitchen, and dining areas, and providing three bedrooms, one with an en suite.

SUSTAINABLE FEATURES

The state of the bungalow was surprisingly good considering its age, however it would not have been suitable for inhabiting due to its lack of services and insulation.

Design features include natural sheep’s wool insulation, a rainwater harvesting system, and sustainable timber cladding.

ARCO2 designs contemporary sustainable homes across Cornwall, including North Cornwall, South Cornwall and coastal locations such as Polzeath, Rock, Padstow, Mawgan Porth, Falmouth and beyond. Our work combines contemporary architecture with low energy design principles, carefully responding to landscape, climate and long-term building performance.
