PASSIVE HOUSE FAMILY HOME IN ROCHE, CORNWALL
Velidhu is a contemporary low energy family home in Roche, Mid Cornwall, designed and built by ARCO2’s founding architect Ian as a home for his own family. Inspired by Passive House principles, the project was created to demonstrate how sustainable design, comfort and affordability can work together in everyday family life.
From the beginning, the goal was to create a home that felt practical, warm and enjoyable to live in while reducing energy demand and environmental impact. The design focused on simplicity, natural materials and efficient building performance, creating spaces for cooking, family life, play and connection to the surrounding landscape.
Built on a modest budget, the project demonstrates how high performance architecture can remain grounded, achievable and carefully considered. Materials were selected for durability, low environmental impact and local sourcing wherever possible, while the surrounding landscape was designed to support wildlife, wildflowers and family living together.
Velidhu reflects ARCO2’s wider approach to sustainable residential architecture across Cornwall, balancing energy efficiency, comfort and thoughtful contemporary design.
We work with clients across the county as experienced architects in Cornwall, delivering bespoke sustainable homes tailored to each landscape, lifestyle and setting.
THE JOURNEY - BUILDING THROUGH SETBACKS
The journey to build Velidhu was far from easy. Halfway through construction, six kilowatts of solar panels were stolen from the roof, together with power tools, most of the hand tools and the hand split shakes. The panels had been installed early to power the site with clean energy, making the loss even harder to take. It was a difficult setback, both financially and emotionally. Ian, his wife, and their two young children sold their home and moved into a small caravan on site to finish the build. The caravan was uninsulated and cold through the winter, but it had a little heating. Ian’s wife saw it as an adventure, though not quite like a holiday in the south of France.
Every challenge became a reason to keep going, proving that sustainable, high-performance homes can still be built with patience, resourcefulness and passion.
A DESIGN THAT EVOLVED - PRACTICAL, BRIGHT AND KIND TO THE PLANET
The design grew from how Ian’s family lives each day. The ground floor opens to the garden, with the main rooms linked by light and space. The solar sun room sits at the centre of the home, a bright place to spend time together and a simple way to warm the house through the day.
Upstairs, the first floor turns so the roof faces the sun, keeping warmth in winter and limiting heat in summer.
The master bedroom extends over the living space, shaping how the house looks and feels. Below it, the green roof softens the building and helps it blend with its surroundings.
Every decision joined practicality with performance. A home designed to benefit from health and wellbeing, that feels calm, efficient and comfortable.
A PLACE THAT GIVES BACK - WARM, BRIGHT AND FULL OF LIFE
Velidhu stands as a modern home shaped by care and persistence. Every room is lit with daylight, and the air feels clean and fresh. The house stays warm in winter, cool in summer, and open to the outdoors. Designed for family life, it feels effortless to live in and closely tied to its surroundings. What began as a personal project is now a clear example of what hands-on design and self-build can achieve. A home that performs beautifully, respects its environment and reflects the people who built it.
DESIGN HIGHLIGHTS - FAMILY ORIENTATED
Velidhu was designed for Ian’s family, with everyday life and practicality at its heart. The open plan kitchen and dining space bring everyone together, allowing cooking, conversation, and play to happen side by side. Large windows open to the garden, giving children space to explore and enjoy active hobbies. Built-in storage keeps the home organised and easy to live in, while the family lawn adds space for outdoor life.
HIGH-END FINISH
The design balances simplicity with craftsmanship. The master bedroom cantilevers out above the ground floor, giving the house its clear shape. Glass floors let light reach every part of the house and the green roof adds colour beside the solar sun space. Each detail feels carefully made. Subtle but full of character.
SUSTAINABLE FEATURES
Velidhu is a true low-energy home. It makes the most of the sun, staying warm in winter and using rainwater harvesting. The walls are super-insulated with local sheep wool, keeping the air fresh and stable all year. A green roof supports wildlife, and every material was chosen for its local source and low environmental impact. The result is a home that performs quietly, fits gently into its corner plot, and gives back to the landscape around it.
