CONTEMPORARY COASTAL HOME ON THE LIZARD PENINSULA
Tresidder is a contemporary sustainable home near Mullion on Cornwall’s Lizard Peninsula, designed by ARCO2. Positioned high above Polurrian Bay within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the project combines low energy design principles with contemporary coastal architecture carefully shaped around its exposed cliffside setting.
Surrounded by open landscape, sea views and the South West Coast Path, the original house no longer responded well to its environment. It was cold, damp and inefficient to heat during the winter months, despite occupying one of the most impressive coastal locations in South Cornwall.
The brief was to replace the existing building with a sustainable contemporary home that made better use of light, views and connection to the landscape while standing up to the exposed coastal climate. The architecture balances simplicity, durability and energy performance, creating a calm home that feels rooted within its surroundings.
We work with clients across the county as experienced architects in Cornwall, delivering bespoke sustainable homes tailored to each landscape and coastal setting.
WORKING WITH THE LANDSCAPE - CHALLENGES ALONG THE COAST
Tresidder’s setting is one of the most striking in Cornwall, but it came with serious challenges. The site is exposed to the weather, sitting high above the sea with open winds and salt air. Every part of the design had to feel right for the coast. Because of its position within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and close to a Site of Special Scientific Interest, planning needed careful consideration. A single large building would have felt too dominant, so the design had to stay modest and gentle on the view.
Access was another test. The narrow private lane made deliveries difficult, and every load of concrete had to be mixed on site and carried down by small dumper. It took patience, planning, and teamwork to keep the build moving smoothly.
Despite these limits, we were focused on the goal: to replace the damp and inefficient house with something well built, low in energy use, and made to last in such an exposed coastal place.
DESIGNING FOR THE COAST - A HOME SHAPED BY ITS PLACE
We shaped Tresidder to feel calm and connected to its surroundings. The house is divided into two parts to keep it modest within the exposed site. One sits low against the hedge, and the other stands slightly taller, shaped like a simple barn.
Inside, the spaces are open and filled with light. Rooms face the sea, so every main space enjoys the view across Polurrian Bay. The layout is simple and comfortable to move through, designed for everyday living and quiet moments alike.
Natural slate and oak cladding give warmth and texture, while the green roofs blend the home into the landscape and support local wildlife. Every part of the design was guided by its coastal setting, creating a home that feels settled, balanced, and built for life by the sea.
LIVING WITH THE SEA - A HOME THAT FITS ITS PLACE
For our clients, Tresidder now feels peaceful and complete. The house sits low in the landscape, with green roofs and timber that merge softly into the cliffs above Polurrian Bay. Every room opens to the sea, filled with daylight and the sound of the coast. Inside, they feel warm and relaxed. The spaces are simple, open, and easy to live in. What was once a damp, hard-to-heat house has become a calm and comfortable home. One that feels truly at home on the Cornish coast.
SPECTACULAR COASTAL VIEWS
We wanted Tresidder to feel open to the sea and sky. Every main room looks out across Polurrian Bay, with wide views that change through the day. The way the house sits on the land, it feels part of the coast, not placed on top of it.
CONTEMPORARY DESIGN
We kept the design simple and honest. Two parts of the house sit naturally within the landscape, one tucked low into the hedge and one shaped like a small barn. Natural timber and slate give it warmth and a familiar Cornish feel.
SUSTAINABLE FEATURES
We built Tresidder to be comfortable, efficient and kind to its setting. The timber frame is insulated with recycled newspaper and fitted with triple glazing to hold warmth and peace. Fresh air moves gently through the house, keeping it balanced and comfortable all year round.
