A CONTEMPORARY FAMILY HOME IN ROCK, NORTH CORNWALL

This contemporary home in Rock, North Cornwall was designed to create a warm, timeless family retreat that sits naturally within its woodland setting. Surrounded by mature Macrocarpa trees, the project focused on designing a home that feels connected to the landscape while balancing traditional character with modern architectural detailing.

Working closely with the client, ARCO2 developed a carefully considered design that responds sensitively to the site, preserving the calm and sheltered atmosphere created by the surrounding trees. Natural materials, thoughtful proportions and strong connections between indoor and outdoor spaces helped create a home that feels both contemporary and deeply rooted in its Cornish setting.

The project reflects ARCO2’s approach as architects in Cornwall, combining sustainable design principles, contemporary architecture and a careful understanding of landscape and place.

We work across the county as experienced North Cornwall architects, creating bespoke contemporary homes designed around modern living, sustainability and the Cornish landscape.

Imagine Waking Up Here

Let’s Make It Happen

DESIGNING WITH CARE FOR NATURE

RESPECTING THE TREES AND CREATING CALM OUTDOORS

Building on this site meant respecting the protected Macrocarpa trees, ensuring their ongoing health by keeping the new house within the exact footprint of the old one.  This restriction made foundations, pathways, and garden layout more complex, requiring careful planning and technical skill.

The client’s wish for traditional, high-quality craftsmanship meant we needed skilled tradespeople for plasterwork, custom wood panels, and engravings, which took extra time and care during construction.  Balancing these demands meant we required patience, care, and deep respect for both the environment and the client’s vision.

MADE WITH NATURAL MATERIALS FOR SIMPLE, HAPPY LIVING

BUILDING FOR HEALTH, CARE AND EVERYDAY COMFORT

The house’s structure uses timber framing with breathable walls filled with natural sheep wool insulation. This combines comfort with energy efficiency.  Locally sourced vertical slate was used on the outside, making the house sturdy and giving it a timeless look that feels right for the place.

Inside, you can see the care and skill in every detail. From smooth plaster and custom wood panels to carved woodwork that shows pride in craftsmanship.  By building where the old house stood, we kept the mature trees safe, so the home enjoys natural privacy and shelter.  The design brings together tradition, sustainability and careful workmanship, exactly as the client hoped.

The careful design and build process transformed the old dwelling’s footprint into a family home that supports everyday living while honouring the landscape.  This home stands as a testament to balancing high-quality craftsmanship, environmental care, and timeless style.
