RENOVATION PROJECT, TREGONNING, CORNWALL

“Our project was to convert and significantly renovate a run down 1930’s property on the South Coast. Ian and his team at Arco2 had the skill-set, foresight, flair and imagination to come up with a truly stunning design which ticked all the boxes and were on hand to help along the way. We are delighted with our new home which maximises the sea views and has an efficient footprint on the environment, with effective insulation and making use of the existing materials where we could.”

A CONTEMPORARY HOME FOR VILLAGE LIVING

This contemporary home in Tregonning, Mid Cornwall was redesigned by ARCO2 to transform a visually dominant roadside property into a more balanced, sustainable and welcoming family home. The new design improved the relationship between the house, the street and the surrounding village setting, creating a home that sits more naturally within the landscape.

Careful attention was given to proportion, materials and architectural form to soften the visual impact of the original building while improving comfort, energy performance and natural light throughout the home. The redesigned property now enhances the entrance to the village and has been positively received by the local community.

The finished home combines sustainable design principles with contemporary Cornish architecture, creating a practical and visually refined living environment designed for long term family life.

We work across the county as experienced architects in Cornwall, designing contemporary homes, renovations and sustainable buildings that respond carefully to their surroundings.

SUSTAINABLE FEATURES

The existing building was a mixture of un-insulated/poorly insulated construction. The new building has been transformed into a much more energy efficient property, as well as being lighter & brighter meaning less lights are used, comfort levels have been vastly improved by minimising air leakage and drafts.

Design performance features include new walls with a U-value of 0.23 W/m²K, a sedum roof achieving 0.17 W/m²K, and high-performance windows with a U-value of 1.29 W/m²K.

CONTEMPORARY DESIGN

Our new design aims to reduce the apparent height, to break up the elements using render, slate hanging and timber cladding and re-organise the interior to improve the buildings proportions which had been destroyed with too much verticality leading to overheating in the summer.

Design features include the addition of solar shading, new balconies, and a green roof to enhance sustainability and outdoor living.

FAR REACHING SEA VIEWS

Another important part of this renovation project was being able to provide better sea views to the client with inside outside spaces. Through carefully considered design; from the bedroom window you can look over the green roof with the sea beyond. Creating not only a far more beautiful view than before but also benefitting biodiversity and ecology.

Design features include a reconfigured interior to maximise views, high-specification glazing, and thoughtful positioning to prevent overlooking.

ARCO2 designs contemporary sustainable homes across Cornwall, including North Cornwall, South Cornwall and coastal locations such as Polzeath, Rock, Padstow, Mawgan Porth, Falmouth and beyond. Our work combines contemporary architecture with low energy design principles, carefully responding to landscape, climate and long-term building performance.
