CONTEMPORARY COASTAL HOME IN PORTWRINKLE, CORNWALL

Reflections is a contemporary sustainable coastal home in Portwrinkle, Cornwall, designed by ARCO2. Positioned on the edge of the coastline, the project combines low energy design principles with contemporary architecture carefully integrated into the surrounding landscape.

Reflections rests above the Cornish coast, looking out towards the sea from a steep and overgrown garden site. The land had been neglected for years, but beneath it sat the opportunity to create a calm contemporary coastal retreat connected closely to its surroundings.

The client wanted a home that felt peaceful, open to the landscape and almost hidden within the hillside when viewed from above. Every aspect of the design focused on strengthening the relationship between architecture, land and sea, ensuring the building belonged naturally to the coastline rather than dominating it.

The vision was both simple and demanding — every room should face the ocean while the building itself remained grounded within the earth. Carefully framed views, natural materials and low profile forms helped shape a home that feels connected to the cliffs, changing light and coastal environment around it.

The result is a sustainable contemporary home designed to balance comfort, performance and sensitivity to place within one of Cornwall’s dramatic coastal settings.

We work with clients across the county as experienced architects in Cornwall, delivering bespoke sustainable homes tailored to each site and landscape.

WORKING WITHIN A SENSITIVE LANDSCAPE - BALANCING NEW DESIGN WITH COMMUNITY AND PLACE

The site was in an Open Area of Local Significance at the entrance to Portwrinkle. It was very visible and there were questions about whether it should be developed at all.  We met with the parish council several times and gained support from them, local residents and the planning officer. Before the build began, there was both excitement and concern about whether it would be delivered as intended.

As part of the planning, we built a new pavement and dry stone wall to give safe access to the beach path. These were completed first to show our intentions to the community.  Throughout the build, we received many kind words and encouragement from people following the progress. The project became a point of local pride, admired for how it blends naturally into the landscape.

DESIGNING WITH THE LAND - A HOME THAT BELONGS TO ITS PLACE

We shaped the house to feel like part of the site. From the road, it almost disappears, while every room looks out to the sea.  The split levels follow the slope of the land. Upstairs, the living spaces are open and filled with light. Downstairs, the bedrooms are quiet and private, opening to the garden.  Natural stone walls, timber, and a wildflower roof help the home settle into its surroundings. The roof and thick insulation keep it warm in winter and cool in summer.

Every detail was designed to make the home feel peaceful, bright, and part of its place. A place to relax, enjoy the view, and feel close to nature.

LIVING WITH THE LAND - A HOME SHAPED BY LIGHT, VIEWS AND PEACE

From the entrance to the village, the house almost disappears into the hillside. Step inside and the sea becomes the focus. Every room is filled with light and deep connection to the coast.  Stone, timber, and glass come together to create warm, balanced spaces. The split levels follow the slope of the land, with open plan living above and quiet rooms below that open to the garden.

Built within a former garden, the home now sits naturally in the landscape. It reflects the clients’ wish for a simple, natural and lasting place by the sea.

PANORAMIC SEA VIEWS

Reflections opens towards the coast, framing wide views of the sea.  Large glass walls and a south-facing window fill the rooms with light and warmth.  The garden flows gently towards the shoreline, creating a calm place to sit and enjoy the view.

OPEN PLAN HOSTING SPACE

The split-level layout makes the living areas feel open and connected.  The kitchen, dining, and lounge flow together, opening onto the decking and garden.  It is a modern, welcoming space made for both quiet evenings and larger gatherings.

SUSTAINABLE DESIGN

Reflections was built to belong to its setting and care for the environment.  Wildflower roofs and natural stone walls help it settle into the land.  Reclaimed sheep wool insulation and passive solar design keep it warm, efficient and balanced throughout the year.
