OYSTERS
“My wife and I needed to develop a parcel of land with outstanding views…the design criteria would have to be sympathetic to the surroundings, be as sustainable as reasonably possible…in short ARCO2 fulfilled all the original criteria with a brilliant sustainable design on good time with no trouble, in fact we enjoyed the experience.”
A SITE WITH BIG POTENTIAL
Oysters sits near Rock and Porthilly in North Cornwall, overlooking the Camel Estuary with views towards Padstow and the open coastline beyond. Set on a steeply sloping site close to the shoreline, the project was designed to make the most of its exceptional setting while carefully considering neighbouring properties and maintaining privacy throughout the development.
The vision for the home was to create a contemporary coastal property that felt closely connected to the estuary and surrounding landscape, while also delivering comfortable, energy efficient living for the future. The design focused on maximising natural light, long distance views and a strong relationship between the home and its unique North Cornwall setting.
As experienced North Cornwall architects and Architects Cornwall, we create bespoke coastal homes across Cornwall that combine sustainable design, contemporary architecture and a careful response to place.
THE WORK AHEAD - WHAT STOOD IN THE WAY
Our clients loved the views, but the steep slope made things tricky. The house needed to sit high enough for the scenery, but not so high that their neighbours felt watched. We had to balance great views with being good neighbours. The house would be seen from the beach and the water, so it really needed to fit in. Big windows mattered to the family, but too much glass could cause bright flashes for walkers and sailors.
Living close to the coast brings strong winds and salty air. The house needed materials that would stand up to storms and still look good after many years. We cared about everyone, the people who’d live here and those nearby. This was about more than a building. It was about staying friendly, protecting views and privacy, and building a home the family would truly love.
A PLACE MADE FOR EVERYDAY LIFE - HOW THE DESIGN BRINGS THE SETTING AND FAMILY TOGETHER
The house is designed so the family can enjoy the view right when they step inside. Large windows fill the home with sunlight and frame the beautiful scenery. Upstairs, the living spaces are open for cooking, eating, and spending time together while watching the beach and water.
Bedrooms are downstairs, with doors to the garden, so everyone can start their day close to nature. There’s lots of space for visitors and for the family to grow in the future. The rooms are bright and open, with timber, stone, and slate that bring a bit of the landscape indoors.
The shape of the house follows the slope, staying low from the road so neighbours keep their views and privacy. Every decision puts the setting first. We wanted living by the water to feel comfortable, easy, and truly like home for the family.
A HOME TRANSFORMED - WHAT IT FEELS LIKE TO LIVE HERE
Now, when the family steps inside, the view welcomes them right away. The estuary is part of daily life, always there through the big windows. Moving from room to room is simple, so everyone can stay connected, with private spaces when needed. The lower part of the site opens toward the shoreline, keeping the coast close to daily life.
Neighbours still keep their own space and views, and the house feels just right for its place. What was once an empty plot is now a cheerful home where family and friends gather, share meals and enjoy life by the water every day.
DESIGN HIGHLIGHTS - A HIDDEN ENTRANCE
From the road, Oysters stays under stated and private. You don’t see the big views until you walk inside. Then the whole house opens up to the water. It’s always a surprise, and it makes arriving feel special.
ESTUARY VIEWS FOR EVERYONE
The roof stays low, so neighbours still enjoy their view. Inside, big windows and a wide balcony let you look straight to the water, and if you want you can walk to the beach in seconds.
BUILT FOR A COASTAL LIFE
Strong local materials, stone, slate, and timber, keep the house sturdy and suit the seaside. Thick insulation and triple glazing save energy, while a green roof protects from storms and helps the home settle into the landscape.
