Fowey, South Cornwall
OLD MILL HOUSE
These barns were formerly part of a mill complex which dates back to 1720.
A BARN CONVERSION BY THE SOUTH CORNWALL COAST
This luxury barn conversion in Fowey, South Cornwall transformed a traditional rural building beside an old mill into high quality self catering holiday accommodation. The project carefully balanced contemporary comfort with the character and heritage of the original structure.
The refurbishment introduced bright open living spaces, improved natural light and modern energy efficient performance while preserving the charm and identity of the existing barn. Materials and detailing were chosen to reflect the surrounding Cornish landscape and create a calm welcoming atmosphere for guests.
The completed conversion now offers stylish holiday accommodation that combines rural character, contemporary design and comfortable modern living within one of Cornwall’s most sought after coastal settings.
We work with clients across the county as experienced architects in Cornwall, designing bespoke barn conversions, renovations and sustainable homes that respond carefully to each landscape and building.
SYMPATHETIC CONVERSION
The building was predominantly constructed of natural stone pointed with lime based mortar. It was important that the new materials used did not detract from the original character of the barns.
Design features include locally grown oak cladding, flush conservation roof lights, and a modern slate roof.
HISTORIC VALUE
The barns were part of a mill complex which dates back to 1720 and remained as a working mill up until the early 18th century. Interestingly the mill is believed to date back to 1400 and the rear garden was used as a meeting place in medieval times.
Design features include a peaceful valley location, a spring-fed stream running through the site, and distant views overlooking Fowey.
SUSTAINABLE HOLIDAY LETS
To keep the cold out from these beautiful original stone built barns a sustainable approach to the energy needs of the old building was required.
Design features include enhanced roof and floor insulation, underfloor heating throughout, and a solar thermal system providing hot water.
ARCO2 designs contemporary sustainable homes across Cornwall, including North Cornwall, South Cornwall and coastal locations such as Polzeath, Rock, Padstow, Mawgan Porth, Falmouth and beyond.
