NEW BUILD SUSTAINABLE DWELLING
Located on a idyllic river side site in Falmouth, this dwelling was conceived around a need to engage with the River.
A PLACE ROOTED IN BUDOCK WATER
A HOME THAT GROWS WITH ITS LANDSCAPE
Merrimit Meadow sits within a peaceful pocket of countryside on the edge of Budock Water near Falmouth, Cornwall. Sheltered within a valley of mature trees, a flowing stream and generous south facing sunlight, the site offered privacy, greenery and a strong connection to the surrounding landscape. Rather than clearing the site, the design approach focused on carefully positioning the home amongst the existing natural features, protecting mature trees, supporting wildlife habitats and preserving the special character of the meadow.
The homeowners had lived and worked locally for many years and wanted a home that reflected a slower pace of living and a deeper connection to place. The result is a contemporary, energy efficient home designed to feel calm, grounded and closely connected to nature.
As experienced Architects Cornwall, we create bespoke contemporary homes across Cornwall that respond carefully to their setting, combining sustainable design, natural materials and modern living.
DESIGNING WITH NATURE IN MIND
FINDING THE BEST WAY TO LIVE WITH THE LAND
The site came with a mix of challenges. Quick changes in ground level, sloping land toward the stream, and a mix of open spaces and sheltering trees.
The design needed to make the most of sunlight, while keeping the house sturdy, practical, and easy to use each day.
Above all, the owners wanted a home that would feel nice, was efficient, and simple to run, so every detail was chosen with lasting comfort in mind.
A HOUSE SHAPED BY LIGHT, LAND, AND MATERIALS
BRINGING THE OUTDOORS INTO EVERYDAY LIVING
The final design placed main living spaces upstairs, where sunlight is brightest and views of trees and sky surround the family as they cook, relax, and spend time together. Bedrooms found a quieter home downstairs, next to the garden and in the shade of the morning. Each room is private, but they all stay connected.
Outside, natural Cornish granite, lime render, slate and timber help the house fit into its surroundings, settling into the shapes and textures of the meadow. Without dominating it.
ROOM TO LIVE WELL, INSIDE AND OUT
LASTING COMFORT AND A SENSE OF BELONGING
Inside, the home’s layout is clear and simple, with rooms flowing easily and fresh air moving through every space.
Sunlight warms the home for free, and views remind the family of why they had chosen this spot. The house rests gently in the meadow, seen from the garden. From the road, only a glimpse of the roof and trees shows, keeping the village’s rural character untouched. The family now has a home that fits naturally into both their daily life and the landscape they love.
DESIGN HIGHLIGHTS
RIVERSIDE LIVING
This home was shaped to enjoy its peaceful setting beside the stream. The first floor is open and social, so the family can cook, relax, and spend time together while looking out toward the river. Large windows bring in sunlight and make the surroundings part of everyday life, without losing privacy from neighbours.
BELONGS TO THE LAND
The house uses a simple form with two mono pitched roofs that follow the shape of the valley. Local materials such as cedar, slate, granite, and lime render help the building feel like it has always been part of the meadow. The design protects the mature trees and keeps the outdoor spaces green and sheltered.
SUSTAINABLE FEATURES
The home is built to stay warm and efficient using natural sheep wool insulation throughout. Solar tubes and a ground source heat pump provide renewable energy for heating and hot water. South facing windows capture natural warmth and light, helping the family live comfortably with a smaller footprint.
