Project

Higher Tregarne is a sensitive farmhouse remodelling project near Falmouth, Cornwall, where an existing rural property was carefully transformed into a bright contemporary home while retaining its original agricultural character and connection to the surrounding landscape.

The design approach focused on balancing modern living with the heritage and simplicity of the farmhouse setting, introducing improved natural light, updated living spaces and enhanced energy performance without losing the building’s rural identity. The result is a contemporary family home that feels both modern and rooted in place.

As experienced Architects Cornwall, we specialise in farmhouse renovations, rural remodelling projects and contemporary homes across Cornwall, combining sustainable design with carefully considered architecture.

SENSITIVE RETROFIT

Poor quality late C20 extensions were removed and replaced with simple modern low energy spaces clad externally in locally sourced green oak. This dwelling is the epitome of modern refurbishment.

Design features include sensitive timber cladding, original stone walls, and a traditional slate roof.

FAMILY DESIGNED LIVING

Making the most of the large spaces afforded, ARCO2 added a glass link and living spaces that open into one another centered around a generous kitchen dining room. The landscaped garden and lawn provide perfect outdoor spaces too.

Design features include flowing living spaces, bright airy rooms, and a spacious garden lawn.

SUSTAINABLE FEATURES

Not only is this building refurbished kindly, but it is highly efficient. The heavy insulation makes for low energy bills, high comfort and excellent indoor air quality. Thermal upgrading of existing building fabric means it is incredibly adapted for minimising heat loss.

Design features include super insulation, heat recovery ventilation, a solar thermal hot water system, and excellent overall energy efficiency.
