HANTERGANTICK COTTAGE
“We are delighted with ARCO2s sympathetic and imaginative transformation and extension of a damp, dilapidated 17th century farmhouse and piggery into a light and warm living space, incorporating the latest eco friendly principles for heating and insulation with locally sourced building materials.” – Mr & Mrs Bertenshaw
RESTORING A HISTORIC CORNISH COTTAGE
This restored cottage in St Breward, North Cornwall combines careful conservation with contemporary living. Originally dating back to the 17th century, the project involved restoring, upgrading and extending the existing cottage while preserving its historic character and traditional Cornish charm.
The design focused on improving comfort, usability and energy performance while respecting the original building and its rural setting. Sensitive alterations introduced brighter living spaces, improved flow and modern functionality without losing the warmth and character that made the cottage special.
Traditional materials and thoughtful detailing helped create a home that feels authentic to its history while supporting modern family life in the Cornish countryside.
We work with clients across the county as experienced architects in Cornwall and trusted North Cornwall architects, creating bespoke contemporary homes, extensions and restoration projects tailored to each setting and lifestyle.
RETENTION OF LOCAL HERITAGE
It was incredibly important to the client that the conversion was both a worthy contribution to the local area while also maintaining its character and spirit.
Design features include minimal intervention to the original structure, high-quality timber joinery, and careful detailing to ensure no visual impact on the cottage’s historic frontage.
SYMPATHETIC CONVERSION
The newly designed piggery with sedum roof, conservation roof windows and well insulated spaces, replaces a cold, damp block work building erected in 1973 which was not in keeping to the local area.
Design features include warm roof construction for improved insulation, abundant natural light throughout, and energy-efficient underfloor heating.
LOCAL NATURAL MATERIALS
Externally the old cement pointing has been removed and repointed with a lime based mortar allowing the walls to finally breath.
Design features include a slate roof with slate hanging, double-glazed softwood windows, and natural stonework that enhances the cottage’s traditional character.
