“Having commenced the challenge of creating our dream home on the North Cornish Coast, we sought hard to find an architectural practice that would match our level of passion, motivation and commitment to the project. We found this and more in Arco2. From the very first meeting they listened to our specific vision for the house and turned our words into incredible ideas. This collaboration resulted in a home that is graceful, restful and elegant, reflecting the initial key words we used in that first ever meeting. It is only because Arco2 truly listened to us as clients that we were able to create a stunning home that not only matched but surpassed our expectations. I would have no hesitation in recommending Arco2 to anyone commencing their own dream project.”
CONTEMPORARY HOME IN MAWGAN PORTH, NORTH CORNWALL
Elements is a contemporary sustainable home in Mawgan Porth, North Cornwall, designed by ARCO2. Positioned high above the bay, the project combines low energy design principles with contemporary coastal architecture shaped around light, longevity and connection to the landscape.
Set above Mawgan Porth, the site overlooks the sea, cliffs and surrounding coastline. The original 1930s house that once stood there was small, worn and no longer made the most of its exceptional setting.
The clients wanted to create a home where they could settle long term – somewhere comfortable, practical and connected to both the coast and local community. The brief focused on designing a calm contemporary home filled with natural light, while ensuring the spaces would continue to work as the family’s needs changed over time.
The architecture was carefully developed to feel part of the landscape rather than separate from it, using simple contemporary forms, natural materials and carefully framed views across the bay. Sustainability, comfort and ease of living sat at the centre of the design approach throughout.
The result is a sustainable contemporary coastal home designed to feel peaceful, durable and deeply connected to its North Cornwall setting.
We work with clients across North Cornwall as experienced North Cornwall architects and architects in Cornwall, delivering bespoke coastal homes tailored to each site.
WORKING WITH THE COAST - CREATING CALM IN A COMPLEX SETTING
Designing and building Elements was far from simple. The site sits high above Mawgan Porth, open to strong winds, salt air, and changing weather. Every part of the home had to cope with the extreme coastal conditions while still feeling calm and simple. Making a home that looks clean and modern but performs like a low-energy building takes real care. Every joint, seal, and layer had to work perfectly together. We worked closely with engineers and builders before construction began, planning every detail to make sure nothing was left to chance. The steep slope and narrow road made the build even harder. Deliveries had to be timed carefully, and privacy had to be protected without blocking the sea views. It tested everyone involved. The location, design, and level of precision all demanded time, patience and teamwork.
DESIGNING FOR LIFE ABOVE THE SEA - A HOME BUILT FOR COMFORT AND EVERYDAY LIVING
The Calders wanted a beautiful home that felt contemporary, bright, and easy to live in. A place that made the most of the sea views and would stay comfortable for years to come.
We placed the main living spaces upstairs so the family could enjoy the views across Mawgan Porth, with bedrooms below that open out to quiet garden spaces. This gave them open, light rooms for spending time together and peaceful areas for rest. The plan was kept simple. Rooms connect naturally from one to another, daylight fills the home, and every space feels practical and welcoming. Parking and access were improved and the whole house was shaped to work with the land rather than against it.
Local stone and timber were used to help the home sit naturally in its setting, giving it a sophisticated feel that fits the life the family wanted by the coast.
LIVING WITH THE VIEW - A HOME THAT FEELS RIGHT FOR ITS PLACE
The old house has been replaced with something simple, dynamic and filled with light.
From anywhere in the home, you can see the sea and sky with breathtaking views that change throughout the day. Big windows and clear glass balconies fill the rooms with daylight and make every view feel part of the landscape. Inside, it feels tranquil and comfortable to move through. The spaces transition smoothly from one to the next, shaped around how the Calders wanted to live. They describe it as graceful, restful and elegant. A reflection of the feeling they hoped for from the start.
From the outside, the home feels modern, balanced and dynamic. The materials and tones complement the landscape, creating a place that feels part of the coast and built to stand the test of time.
SUSTAINABLE FEATURES, CRAFT AND DETAIL
We designed Elements to feel relaxed to live in and easy to care for. Thick insulation, triple-glazed windows and a ground source heat pump keep the home warm and balanced through every season. A fresh air system keeps it comfortable and healthy, helping the home work naturally with the coast around it.
Inside, we focused on calm, wellbeing and comfort. A floating staircase and glass bridge bring light and openness, while soft colours and natural textures add warmth. Every detail was made with care to feel stylish, balanced, and lasting.
