“Building our family home has been one of the most humbling and rewarding experiences of our lives. Each day, we wake up grateful, not just for the house itself, but for what it represents. It’s a place filled with love, effort, memories and the kind of beauty that comes from building something with your own hands. We set out to create a home that would grow with us, shelter future generations, and offer comfort in every season and we’ve done just that. This journey has taught us more than we ever imagined. It’s been challenging, inspiring and completely life-changing. We feel incredibly lucky to have had this opportunity and it’s something we’ll always treasure.”
A CONTEMPORARY FAMILY HOME IN MID CORNWALL
Curve House is a contemporary sustainable family home in Roche, Mid Cornwall, designed by ARCO2. Positioned within the Cornish countryside, the project combines low energy design principles with modern architecture shaped around natural light, flexibility and long term family living.
The site offered wide reaching countryside views and the opportunity to create a home designed entirely around the way the family wanted to live. From the beginning, the focus was on creating spaces that felt open, welcoming and connected to the landscape while remaining practical and comfortable throughout the year.
As both architect and client, the design process explored how a modern family home could adapt over time while remaining efficient, easy to maintain and closely linked to the outdoors. Natural light played a central role throughout the design, with every room carefully positioned to maximise daylight while controlling heat and glare.
The result is a sustainable contemporary home designed for modern family life in Cornwall, balancing energy efficiency, comfort and simplicity within a calm countryside setting.
We work with clients across the county as experienced architects in Cornwall, creating bespoke sustainable homes tailored to each landscape, setting and way of life.
WORKING WITH CONSTRAINTS - BALANCING DESIGN, COST AND TIME
Building this home was challenging. We wanted to create something ambitious on a very small budget, which meant every step needed careful thought. This was never just a design project. It became a real test of patience, skill, and determination. We bought materials bit by bit as we could afford them, and the build slowly took shape over four years. To save money, we did much of the work ourselves. We even learned how to use a second-hand telehandler to lift and move heavy materials. It was hard work, but it gave us the freedom to keep going without relying on others. The hardest part was the time it took. Long days, late nights, and time away from family made it tough to stay motivated. It tested our energy, focus, and commitment in ways we never expected.
MADE FOR EVERYDAY LIVING - SPACES THAT BRING FAMILY TOGETHER
We wanted the house to be easy to live in. A place where everyday life could flow naturally and everyone could feel at home. The heart of the house is an open plan, with the kitchen, dining, and living areas all connected. Daylight moves through the spaces and out to the garden, keeping every room bright and connected to the outdoors.
Each floor serves a different purpose. Downstairs is for family activities and spending time together. Upstairs is quieter, with places to relax, study, and take in the views. The roof terraces let you enjoy the landscape and look out toward Helman Tor and Brown Willy.
We chose simple, honest materials that would age well and were practical to build with. The spaces breathe naturally, and the home stays warm and comfortable through the seasons.
It is a home designed for family life. Bright, flexible, and made to last.
A HOME THAT HOLDS ITS STORY - CRAFTED WITH CARE AND INTENTION
Building Curve House took time and we made sure to approach each step with patience and care. We thought about every detail and made each choice carefully.
It’s a self-built family home that reflects our values. Practical, personal and enduring.
The house stands proudly in the Cornish landscape. It is full of light, connected to its surroundings, and ready for the future. The journey to build it was long, but it was worth it. It taught us about building, about family and about what it really means to create a home. What stands here now isn’t just a house. It’s something we built with our own hands and our whole hearts. A lasting part of the family and a true labour of love.
SUSTAINABLE FEATURES
Curve House was created to feel good to live in and kind to the environment. Local materials and simple fabric first systems were chosen to lower energy use and keep running costs down. We added solar panels, a ventilation system and an air source heat pump so the home stays warm, fresh and balanced through the seasons. Rainwater is collected and reused, helping the house run gently and responsibly.
CONTEMPORARY FEATURES
Natural light was used to shape how each space changes from morning to evening. Large windows open the rooms to the garden, filling them with warmth and life. We shaped the curved wall to follow the sun, creating peaceful, bright spaces that stay close to nature.
OPEN PLAN LIVING
The layout was planned to feel open and easy to live in. The staircase, kitchen and living areas flow naturally together, making the house feel connected. Sunlight moves softly through the spaces, keeping them bright and welcoming. We designed every detail to be considered, robust and made for everyday family life.
