CASALINHO
Casalinho comprises of 2 contemporary dwellings set in a perfect position to overlook the beautiful Fowey Estuary.
A FRESH LOOK AT PIKES HILL
Located on Pikes Hill in Fowey, Cornwall, this project involved reimagining the design of two approved new homes to better reflect the character of the surrounding townscape. Although planning consent had already been granted, concerns had been raised regarding the proportions, roof forms and relationship of the buildings to the steep hillside setting and neighbouring terraces.
Working within the approved footprint and scale, the design approach focused on creating homes that responded more carefully to the site, the conservation setting and the experience of both residents and neighbours. By revisiting the architectural language and relationship to the slope, the project aimed to create two contemporary homes that felt more considered, more comfortable to live in and more connected to the character of Fowey.
As experienced Architects Cornwall, we work on sensitive hillside and conservation projects across Cornwall, creating contemporary architecture that responds carefully to both place and community.
WORKING WITH COMPLEX LIMITATIONS - ADAPTING WITHIN TIGHT CONSTRAINTS
Once we began refining the plans, the challenge grew. Every detail mattered. Roof pitch, plinth height, window depths, and the main entrances all came under discussion. We needed to show how each update improved the appearance while still working on the steep hillside. There were concerns that the buildings lacked balance and clarity from the street. We also needed to respect conservation area rules that protected local character. That meant careful design that worked both technically and visually.
REFINING THE DESIGN - RESPONDING WITH CARE
We worked closely with the planning and conservation teams to refine every part of the visible design.
The ground levels were lowered so the houses would sit better into the slope. The stone plinths were reduced to stop the buildings feeling too heavy. The roof pitches were increased to settle better with the nearby terraces. Flat roofs were removed, chimneys taken out, and balconies made smaller to simplify the form. Entrances were redesigned so each home felt respectful from the street. We recessed the windows to add depth and shadow, helping the buildings feel comfortable within the conservation area. The main elevations feel more balanced and confident in the Pikes Hill streetscape.
A BALANCED OUTCOME - RESPECTING HERITAGE AND MODERN LIFE
The updated design now works for the people who live here and those who walk past every day. The homes feel like they belong on this hill, following the rhythm of the street, with familiar materials and simple forms that sit well with Fowey. Inside, the layouts are practical and bright. Rooms are arranged to make everyday life easy. Daylight reaches into the living spaces, and the hillside no longer feels like an obstacle to overcome. What started as a careful review ended as two homes that now respect both the heritage around them and the people who will call them home.
DESIGN HIGHLIGHTS - CONTEMPORARY FAMILY DESIGN
These homes were carefully lowered into the hillside to protect views for neighbours and keep a modest presence on the street. Large glass windows fill the open plan kitchen, dining, and living spaces with daylight and open up views across Fowey. Private balconies extend the living areas outdoors, creating space to enjoy quiet mornings or spend time with friends and family.
SUN PATH
Both homes are positioned to follow the sun through the day. South facing spaces draw in natural light, while large windows and roof openings keep every room bright and inviting. The flow between spaces feels effortless and natural, with daylight guiding movement from one room to the next
PERIOD CHARACTER
The design respects the older terraces nearby while bringing a modern clarity to their form. Smooth render, slate roofs, and finely detailed windows connect the homes to their surroundings without imitation. It’s a thoughtful balance between tradition and new design, made to fit quietly into the conservation area.
