Ladock, Mid Cornwall
BISSICK MANOR BARN
A Grade II Listed former mill sympathetically restored into a delightful home.
REWORKING A GRADE II LISTED BARN CONVERSION
This Grade II listed barn conversion in Ladock, Mid Cornwall was redesigned by ARCO2 to create a more open, practical and spacious family home while carefully respecting the historic character of the original building. Although the property already had planning approval, the existing layout did not suit the client’s needs or make the best use of the listed structure.
The redesigned interior introduced improved flow, brighter living spaces and a more considered relationship between the historic fabric of the barn and modern family living. Every design decision was carefully balanced to preserve the character and architectural integrity of the building while improving comfort and functionality.
The result is a contemporary family home that retains the charm and significance of the original listed barn while providing a practical and welcoming space designed for long term living.
We work across the county as experienced architects in Cornwall, specialising in listed buildings, barn conversions and sensitive contemporary renovations.
GRADE II LISTED
ARCO2s priority for this design was to convert the barn in a sympathetic way that would have no detrimental effect to the listed building. To achieve this it meant replacing some of the misguided remedial work that had already taken place.
The roof was reconstructed using a high collar truss structure with purlins, while the existing stone walls were re-pointed with lime-based mortar to maintain breathability. Windows and doors were detailed with brick quoins and granite lintels to complement the building’s historic character.
TRADITIONAL INTERIOR DESIGN
The exposed stone walls and natural colour palette give this barn conversion a cosy, warm and inviting homely feel.
Design features include stunning exposed beam ceilings, natural stone walls, and handcrafted hardwood timber doors.
LOCALLY SOURCED MATERIALS
It is an important ethos for ARCO2 that all materials are sourced locally as much as possible, not only to reduce carbon emissions but to also make sure the buildings we design stay in-keeping with the local area.
Design features include a natural slate roof, timber flooring, and traditional clay ridge tiles.
ARCO2 designs contemporary sustainable homes across Cornwall, including North Cornwall, South Cornwall and coastal locations such as Polzeath, Rock, Padstow, Mawgan Porth, Falmouth and beyond. Our work combines contemporary architecture with low energy design principles, carefully responding to landscape, climate and long-term building performance.
