ANCHOR WAREHOUSE

“ARCO2 represent a clear vehicle for visualising, creating and successfully delivering buildings which are of the moment, the past and for the future. Owning a building designed by ARCO2 is both unique and in my opinion timeless.” – Luis Rivero

Project Overview
Project Technical

Project

Located on the historic quay at Penryn Creek, Cornwall, this project involved the careful restoration and conversion of a derelict warehouse and Fox’s Boatyard buildings into contemporary spaces that respect the site’s rich maritime heritage and industrial character.

The architectural approach focused on preserving the historic fabric and identity of the waterfront buildings while introducing sensitive contemporary interventions that support modern use and long term sustainability. By balancing restoration with carefully considered design, the project helps protect an important part of Penryn’s historic waterfront for future generations.

As experienced Architects Cornwall, we work on heritage, waterfront and adaptive reuse projects across Cornwall, combining sensitive restoration with contemporary architectural design.

Awards and recognition

Conservation

Materials were removed and reused wherever possible throughout this project, this ensured the sympathetic and sustainable approach.

Granite columns were repurposed to rebuild walls and create outdoor seating, fallen bricks were reused to repair original arches and hallways, and bricks from the existing chimney stack were incorporated into the restoration.

Luxury Apartments

After facing many challenges during this restoration, the team were able to successfully achieve one of the key design criteria by sympathetically integrating and reusing the existing chimney stack throughout the building. This fantastic conversion of Anchor Warehouse means it now stands a proud community building as it did once before.

Design features include subtle sub-division of open plan areas, focal architectural elements within selected apartments and commercial units, and a mix of loft-style waterside apartments, live/work spaces, and commercial premises.

Natural Stonework

During the restoration and conservation, care was taken when selecting materials to make sure they were in keeping with the existing look of the building. To achieve this samples were taken of the existing lime and earth mortar then replaced with a suitable lime based mortar.

Design features include breathable lime pointing, retention of internal natural stonework due to the building’s listed status, and preservation of its historic external appearance.
