Pioneering Sustainable Architecture in Cornwall

How did it all begin?

Over two decades ago, opportunities for truly sustainable architecture in Cornwall were almost non-existent. Few practices were specialising in low-energy buildings, and there was little recognition of the potential for sustainable design.  Seeing this gap, we founded ARCO₂ with a single purpose: to create a practice dedicated to sustainability. We started humbly, working from the loft of a house before gradually expanding into the rest of the building. As our work grew, so did the need for space — and with that, the opportunity to experiment.

We purchased a former Forestry Commission building and transformed it into a living laboratory. Alterations and conversions were carried out by us in our spare time, testing healthy, natural, and low-impact building solutions. This hands-on experimentation led us to design and prototype pre-fabricated straw bale and sheep wool–insulated buildings. Eventually, we established our award-winning sustainable office — a natural, healthy, and inspiring environment that reflects everything we stand for.

From the very beginning, sustainability has not just been a philosophy but a way of life for our team. Many of our staff have built their own sustainable projects, gaining invaluable hands-on experience that continues to shape the way we design today.

Our roots in Cornwall

Both directors of ARCO₂ are proudly Cornish. Ian has worked in Cornwall his entire career, committed to shaping the built environment of the county he loves. Nathan’s background includes quantity surveying and building work outside the region, giving him a broader perspective before moving fully into architecture.

Cornwall’s landscape — from its dramatic coastline and wild moors to its historic towns — offers an extraordinary canvas for architecture. Clients are drawn here for its beauty and lifestyle, while for us, the county’s richness and diversity continually provide inspiration.

What makes architecture in Cornwall distinctive?

Cornwall has a long tradition of innovation and craftsmanship. Its architecture reflects a deep connection to nature, with materials such as slate and granite celebrated worldwide for their quality. Today, Cornwall is recognised as a place where sustainability and design innovation thrive side by side.  At ARCO₂, we see this heritage as a responsibility and an opportunity. We design buildings that are site-specific and responsive, rooted in their context while embracing modern sustainable technologies.

Our ethos

Our ethos is simple yet powerful:

  • To design well-considered, bespoke buildings that belong to their landscape.
  • To create low-energy, healthy, and comfortable homes that enhance wellbeing.
  • To deliver architecture that is robust, beautiful, and sustainable.

Every project begins with the land, the people, and the environment — resulting in unique buildings that could only exist in that place.

What inspires us?

We are inspired daily by the environment, materials, landscape, sustainability, innovation, Cornwall, and its people. Above all, we are inspired by the opportunity to design spaces that improve lives while respecting the planet.

Our three-phase process

We guide clients through three clear phases to achieve the right balance between lifestyle and design:

  • Discovery – We explore how you want to live, your needs, and your ambitions. This stage sets the foundations for design inspired by your lifestyle and sustainability principles.
  • Design – We create bespoke architecture that frames views, connects inside and out, and enhances health and comfort. From material choices to energy efficiency, every detail is carefully considered.
  • Delivery – The vision becomes reality. With our experience in both design and construction, we ensure your project is robust, beautifully finished, and truly site-specific.

Living and working in Cornwall

Life outside of ARCO₂ still revolves around building. Both directors have self-built their own homes, and construction has often doubled as their downtime.  Beyond work, Ian enjoys surfing, paddle boarding, running, and fishing — all ways of enjoying Cornwall’s coast, moors, and countryside.   Access to nature is not just a source of relaxation but a constant reminder of why sustainable design matters.

Looking ahead
From a loft workspace to award-winning offices, from straw bale prototypes to cutting-edge Passivhaus designs, our journey has always been about living and breathing sustainability. We remain as passionate today as when we began: creating architecture that is rooted in Cornwall, respectful of the landscape, and designed for a sustainable future.
