Old Coastguard Cottages coastal construction site during early excavation works

Old Coastguard Cottages: Early Site Progress on a Sensitive Coastal Project

Every coastal project begins with a detailed understanding of place.

At Old Coastguard Cottages, the early stages of work have focused on preparing a sensitive and complex site for the next phase of construction. Set within a striking coastal location, the project requires careful coordination between architecture, access, landscape, ground conditions and the wider public setting.

Before demolition began, the existing site was reviewed in relation to its surroundings, including the road, neighbouring properties, public routes and coastal views. These early observations are an important part of the design and construction process, helping to ensure that the project responds to the realities of the site rather than imposing a solution upon it.

The demolition phase marked the beginning of physical change. On a constrained coastal site, this work needs to be carefully managed, with attention given to access, safety and the sequencing of future construction. While this stage can appear temporary or disruptive, it is a key part of preparing the ground for a more considered long-term outcome.

As mass excavation has progressed, the form of the site has begun to change. Ground levels, retaining conditions and construction access all play a significant role in how the building will sit within its setting. This stage starts to reveal the relationship between the proposed architecture and the landscape around it.

The project also includes improvements to the public footpath, reflecting the importance of considering not only the private dwelling but also the experience of those moving through and around the site. On coastal projects, these connections are particularly important, where public access, views and landscape character all contribute to the wider sense of place.

More recent progress has included work around the front gate and excavation areas, helping to establish safe and practical site movement as the project moves forward.

These early stages show the level of thought and coordination involved before a building begins to take shape. For ARCO2, this is where good architecture starts: with a careful reading of the site, a clear understanding of construction, and a design process that responds to both place and purpose.
