Building for Education: Designing Spaces that Inspire and Sustain

There’s a saying often attributed to the Dalai Lama: “If you think you are too small to make a difference, try sleeping with a mosquito.” At ARCO₂, we believe architecture has exactly that potential – the ability to make a lasting difference, especially when it comes to education.

Why Education Matters in Architecture

School buildings are where children spend the majority of their waking lives. The spaces they occupy directly influence their health, wellbeing, and ability to learn. Designing for education is therefore about more than meeting functional requirements – it’s about creating environments that are inspiring, healthy, and fit for purpose.  At the same time, we cannot ignore the environmental impact of building itself. Every project consumes resources and produces emissions. For us as RIBA Chartered Architects, the challenge – and the opportunity – is to ensure that new educational buildings do more good than harm. That means prioritising sustainability at every stage: from the materials we specify to the way we shape daylight, air, and space.

The Barriers We Face

Delivering this vision is not always straightforward. Funding pressures, complex procurement processes, shifting teaching methods, and the rapid pace of digital technology all add layers of challenge. Too often, short-term decisions result in stock design solutions with little connection to their locality or intended use. Materials might be chosen for durability without consideration of their toxicity, embodied carbon, or the wellbeing of the children inside.

Turning Challenges into Opportunities

Yet, even within these constraints, there are powerful opportunities. At ARCO₂, we see the design and construction process itself as an educational journey. By involving pupils, teachers, and the wider community from the outset, we create a shared vision that not only informs the building but enriches the learning experience.

Over the years, this approach has enabled children to:

  • Engage in hands-on building activities such as contributing to cob walls or insulation.
  • Learn about sustainable materials like timber, straw, and sheep’s wool, understanding why they create healthier, breathable interiors.
  • Participate in site visits during construction, seeing first-hand how concepts become buildings.
  • Fundraise or recycle materials, directly linking curriculum topics to the built environment.

These experiences foster a deeper appreciation of sustainability and design, lessons that pupils carry with them into adulthood.

Designing Healthy, Sustainable Spaces

Our completed education projects embody the same principles that run through all ARCO₂ buildings:

  • Low-energy, fabric-first design with natural ventilation and daylight at the core.
  • Non-toxic, locally relevant materials that connect with both community and landscape.
  • Flexible internal and external spaces that encourage learning to extend beyond the classroom.

The result is buildings that not only support today’s students but stand as healthy, resilient assets for generations to come.

Our Commitment

Ultimately, building for education is about balance – meeting current needs while safeguarding the future. At ARCO₂, we are committed to designing schools and learning spaces that respect their setting, minimise environmental impact, and inspire the children who use them. Because if architecture can make a difference anywhere, it is surely in the spaces where we nurture future generations.
