From Experiment to Excellence — ARCO₂’s 22-Year Journey to the Frontline of Sustainable Design
For more than two decades ARCO₂ has grown from a small Cornish practice into one of the region’s most respected names in sustainable architecture. Our journey has always been shaped by two convictions: that buildings must be beautifully resolved and that they must perform — for people and for the planet. Below are the defining chapters of that journey: the early experiments, the lessons learned, the partnerships formed, and the projects and awards that mark ARCO₂’s path to leadership.
Early experiments and a learning mindset
From the outset we treated our own work as a continuous R&D laboratory. Early projects and studio conversions gave us the freedom to test materials and detailing in real conditions — natural insulation, low-impact finishes and locally sourced timber — and to demonstrate what sustainable design looks like in practice. That hands-on, learning-first approach established the technical and cultural foundations of the practice.
Turning research into delivery: the ADD partnership
A major turning point for ARCO₂ was moving from purely design to a joined-up design + delivery model. Our sister company, ADD Sustainable Construction, was developed to close the gap between architectural intent and on-site delivery. That integrated approach means we control the technical detail that really matters — airtightness, junctions, material performance — so clients get the outcome we specify, not an approximation of it. Today ADD SC is widely recognised for its delivery capability, including recent regional housebuilder recognition.
Projects that prove the approach
Over the past decade a series of projects have become case studies for what great sustainable design can achieve:
- Turnstones, Polzeath — a carbon-conscious, low-energy home that took the Carbon Reduction Impact award at the CABE Built Environment Awards, and the National Housebuilder Award at the 2025 Federation of Master Builders awards ceremony, demonstrating that small practices can deliver national-level outcomes.

- Keynvor, Mawgan Porth — a Passivhaus-inspired coastal retreat that has collected multiple awards for design and construction quality, including regional recognition at the LABC Building Excellence Awards.

- Ladybird Farm and other high-performance homes have showcased insulated concrete formwork (ICF) and hybrid systems in real projects, earning industry recognition and offering clients robust, durable buildings.

These projects are more than trophies: they’re living proof that fabric-first design, excellent detailing and strong site delivery produce homes that are comfortable, energy-efficient and low maintenance.
Recognition: awards and peer validation
Our work has been acknowledged across national and regional awards, reflecting both design quality and measurable sustainability outcomes. Recent headline wins and shortlistings include CABE, LABC, Green Apple, RICS and multiple local business awards — evidence that our approach resonates with clients, peers and judges alike.

A visible, trusted presence (web & social)
We’ve also built a visible presence online and on social media to share lessons, project progress and technical thinking. ARCO₂ and ADD regularly post project updates, award news and construction imagery on Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn and Pinterest — helping clients and the wider public see how sustainable projects are delivered in practice.
From experiments to standard practice
Some of our early experiments became invaluable lessons but not long-term products — part of an R&D chapter that taught us how to scale sustainable ideas in reality. Those lessons shaped how we now design and build: proven assemblies, measured performance targets, and a collaborative delivery chain led by ADD SC and selected local builders.
What ARCO₂ offers clients today
Choosing ARCO₂ means engaging a practice that combines:
- Fabric-first, low-energy design (super insulation, airtightness, thermal-bridge control).
- Measured sustainability — projects designed and built to demonstrable performance.
- Integrated delivery through ADD Sustainable Construction and trusted local contractors, so the design intent is realised on site.
- Award-winning experience — buildings recognised for design and carbon outcomes.
- Transparency and learning — we share progress and evidence, helping clients understand how design translates to long-term value.
Leading by example
We still think like experimenters — testing, measuring and refining — but now our ideas are backed by a track record of built projects and third-party recognition. That combination of curiosity and delivery is why clients choose us for complex coastal homes, sensitive conversions and low-energy new builds.
