Conversion of external store to provide therapy and art studio – Camelford, Cornwall 

Located on an existing rural holiday complex, this conversion was carefully and cleverly designed alongside both client and planning requirements. ARCO2 secured planning permission for a large granite constructed building over the site of a concrete block built external store. The new design incorporated a Cornish rubble stone wall which provided a key aesthetic and physical boundary to a public thoroughfare. The design was conceived around the need to create a relaxing courtyard that would aid and inspire future clientele. Externally, locally sourced granite rubble stone, oak timber and timber doors and windows all combined to provide elevations that sympathised with the existing farm cottage and holiday lets. The use of 184mm timber frame walls and 300mm depth roof timbers with fullfill sheep wool insulation all combined with an efficient oil fuelled heating system provided a cost effective, convenient and sustainable solution to space and water heating. Natural light is promoted into the artists studio via north facing roof lights and west facing glazing. The therapy area is tucked away to the more private quarters of the barn incorporating a curve in the floor plan and smaller windows to provide a soothing, relaxing ambience.
