Barn Conversion – Cornwall 

This project was designed around the need to carry out a complex barn conversion and extension under an extremely tight budget. Working closely with the client ARCO₂ procured an imaginative and interesting layout to an existing former dairy house to produce this stunning dwelling. The existing shell to the former dairy is constructed out of Cornish granite. Its precise assembly has meant that it has remained in an excellent state of repair and required little intervention to provide a water tight structure. The addition of sheep wool insulated timber frame walls, polystyrene batts under the floor slab and extruded polystyrene insulation all combined to provide a good compromise between utilising sustainable materials and embracing the needs of the client to keep items such as the roof structure exposed to create suitably ‘super insulated’ living space. With an internal floor area of around 200 square metres, the 10KW heat pump deliver the space and water heating needs for around £800.00 per annum. High level roof lights and opening doors at low level enables the building to rely on passive ventilation when required for cooling.The renovation and extension utilised green oak, natural slate, locally sourced granite and lime mortars as well as incorporating a new sedum flat roof.
